Connecting Communities:
20 years of community radio

The Community Radio movement began in India two decades ago with a mission to elevate marginalised voices, facilitate the sharing of local knowledge, foster collaboration, celebrate cultural diversity, and empower communities to share their narratives. Operated by and for the communities they serve, these stations serve as platforms for generating unique content, encouraging community members to become content creators. In addition to providing information and entertainment, community radios have emerged as development tools, capable of promoting positive social change through participatory approaches. They are powerful community-owned connectors that amplify local voices, promote civic engagement, and enrich community life. They authentically represent the priorities of the people they serve.
